Job Description

  • Manages, coordinates, and reviews all accounting functions for the museum ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements. Stays abreast of regulatory developments and industry best practices. Implements changes in accounting procedures as necessary.
  • Working closely with the COO and Finance team, leads annual budgeting and reporting for the City and County of San Francisco.
  • Following the monthly, quarterly, and year-end closings, ensures timely preparation of financial statements. Coordinates with the Finance team to identify key drives of variances.
  • Manages museum data for surveys, internal and external performance metrics, and other periodic reports.
  • Oversees daily cash management. Serves as liaison with external investment managers and monitors and reconciles fund and endowment balances.
  • Coordinates all audit activity including annual financial and OMB A-133 audits.
  • Works closely with Assistant Controller to prepare and file annual tax forms including 990, 199, and ancillary forms. Collaborates with HR for personnel-related audits and filings.
  • Helps support other departments with financial and accounting information including grant applications and reporting, City reporting, and recording of admissions revenue.
  • Working closely with the COO, develops and implements financial policies and procedures. Educates and trains museum staff to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Maintains and enhances internal controls including continuous improvement and documentation of policies and procedures.
  • Manages, trains, and mentors accounting staff. Encourages ongoing learning and improvement in the department.

The Successful Applicant

  • BA/BS in Accounting or related field. CPA highly desirable
  • Eight to ten (8-10) years of progressively responsible accounting and finance experience, including at least two (2) years of supervisorial and management experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Experience and/or knowledge of non-profit legal, tax, and special accounting needs, and general issues within the non-profit environment, including restricted fund accounting and endowments.
  • Extensive experience with, and knowledge of, accounting, reporting and spreadsheet systems and software.
  • Strong analytical, planning and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, supervise, motivate, train, and evaluate staff; handle multiple demands; manage deadlines and prioritize workloads; establish and maintain positive cooperative, and productive working relationships.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate accounting and financial principles to a wide variety of individuals.
