Job Description

The R&D Engineering Manager - Electrical will have the following responsibilities:

  • Manage, plan, and direct electrical engineering activities and staff with overall responsibility for delivering high quality products on time and on budget that meet or exceed requirements.
  • Establish high quality standard for department and promote sense of urgency and accountability.
  • Analyze design, test, and study feasibility of subsystems, assemblies, and their components to identify opportunities for design, cost or time-to-market improvements.
  • Establish and implement structured engineering design processes and metrics that effectively measure and improve team performance.
  • Continuously seek innovative ways to improve development productivity through the introduction of new technologies, tools, systems, methods, and controls.
  • Monitor and implement industry best practices to develop techniques to accomplish rapid execution of design related tasks, with a focus on getting tasks accomplished in the fewest calendar days possible.
  • Ensure that proper documentation, such as test specifications, design changes and procedures, is provided to the appropriate functional areas.
  • Select, develop, and provide guidance, coaching, and mentoring to electrical engineering staff, including performance management and evaluations.
  • Work cross functionally with other leaders in different departments of the organization including - Marketing, Sales, Program Management, Procurement, Manufacturing, Quality, Finance, and Service.
  • Responsible for resource allocation of staff within work level demands and budgetary constraints by participating in development/management of the annual operating budget.
  • Monitor project status and pursue corrective action, as required in terms of schedules, budgets, priorities, staffing, and work quality.

The Successful Applicant

The preferred candidate for this R&D Engineering Manager - Electrical will have the following background and technical experience:

  • BS, Electrical Engineering - advanced degree highly desirable
  • Minimum of 10 years of commercial / industry electrical design experience, including experience as Electrical Engineering Manager with:
    • Experience with all phases of the product development life-cycle, including concept, design, implementation, debug, verification, qualification, and transfer
    • Leading complex products involving integration of hardware and software components, including embedded microprocessor control products
    • Designing successful products for reliability, serviceability, and manufacturability
    • Creating structured engineering design processes and metrics that effectively measure and improve team performance
    • Managing a complex portfolio of products and projects
    • Defining and managing an R&D budget
    • Developing products in an ISO regulated environment
  • Experience with all phases of the product development life-cycle (including concept, design, implementation, debug, verification, qualification, and transfer) having been direct involved:
    • Leading complex products involving integration of hardware and software components including embedded microprocessor control products
    • Designing successful products for reliability, serviceability, and manufacturability
    • Creating structured engineering design processes and metrics that effectively measure and improve team performance
    • Managing a complex portfolio of products/projects, defining/managing an R&D budget and developing products in an ISO regulated environment


  • Exceptional ability to lead, motivate, and manage high-performance people and teams
    • Must be a catalyst for change, with the ability to persuade and influence others
    • Strong interpersonal, facilitation and problem-solving skills that can be applied in both managerial and technical capacities.
    • Excellent organizational, communication (verbal and written), and presentation skills
    • Proven success in managing timely completion of engineering projects through resource allocation, scheduling, budgeting, etc.
    • Strong ability to analyze, introduce, and drive process development improvements
    • Ability to work in cross functional and cross divisional environment
