My client is a global commodity merchant with an integrated set of operations consisting of physical and financial commodity trading and the ownership, operation, and development of commodities-related upstream and infrastructure assets.

Job Description

  • Oversee the month-end, quarter-end and year-end closing of the books, reconciliations and periodic journal entries.
  • Gain a thorough understanding of the operations of the plants and build relationships with each of the plant managers.
  • Assist in managing the G&A expenses of the plants, including developing proper allocation of cost between profit centers and providing analysis and insight on cost reduction opportunities.
  • Review and prepare month-end, quarter-end, and year-end financial statements in compliance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Act as the primary liaison to coordinate and manage requests from external auditors for consolidated and statutory audits.
  • Manage day-to-day activities such as approving posting reclass journal entries, clearing open items, and coaching less experienced staff members of the team.
  • Identify and implement improved close processes to streamline timelines while mitigating risk.
  • Ensure that the appropriate financial control framework and safeguards are in place to operate and accurately report the financial condition of the organization in accordance with GAAP and company policies.
  • Conduct analytical reviews of financial and management accounting information and present analysis and commentaries.
  • Complete special projects as requested by management, such as legal entity rationalization.
  • Offer judgment on financial matters, accounting policy, and on ways of improving the controls and processes.
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures manual.
  • Interpret and communicate financial information to non-finance users.
  • Work on various systems and financial projects as necessitated by management.

The Successful Applicant

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with knowledge of multiple accounting disciplines (i.e. US GAAP, IFRS, etc.).
  • 5-7 years of experience, including experience in a regional or Big 4 accounting firm.
  • Experience in financial services is strongly preferred, commodities experience is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Proficient in Excel and computer literate.
  • Self-starter with a willingness and ability to be "hands-on".
  • Prior exposure to SAP reporting is a plus.
  • Ability to multi-task, juggle multiple assignments at the same time, and work independently.
