With a focus on ground up construction on home-building with a significant focus on rebuilding after the Palisades fires, our client is rapidly growing. Due to this growth, they are now looking for a strong Controller to have oversight to the entire accounting function, while managing a team of accountants.Reporting directly into one of the Owners, the Controller will be hands-on in the accounting function, working daily with project accounting. In addition, you will work collaboratively with third-party accounting firms, and gaining direct insight and exposure to C-Suite leaders daily, while managing the entire accounting function.Job DescriptionConstruction Controller Responsibilities:Own the setup and ongoing integrity of the accounting system in QuickBooks, including COA, classes, and cost codes/types, aligned with standardized WBS/CSI structures and Procore project templatesMaintain audit-ready records for all financial activity, including POs, subcontracts, SOVs, COR logs, approvals, pay applications, lien waivers, and 1099 documentationEnforce commitment controls and three-way matching (PO, receipt, invoice) across all vendors and subcontractorsEstablish and manage project budget baselines by phase and trade; track commitments, actual costs, retainage, and estimated cost at completion (EAC)Coordinate approved change orders with Project Operations to ensure immediate updates to budgets, SOVs, and customer contractsLead monthly job-level variance analysis by cost code, identifying root causes and defining corrective action plansExecute weekly accounts payable cycles, including subcontractor prequalification, insurance and compliance verification, invoice processing, and payment release against executed lien waiversOwn job-level cash flow forecasting, including funding requirements, deposit timing, and draw packages; proactively escalate risksDesign, implement, and enforce internal controls, including segregation of duties, approval matrices, journal entry controls, and vendor master governanceManage bank and credit card reconciliations, accruals, WIP and over/under billings, and revenue recognition and cost capitalizationEnsure ongoing tax and regulatory compliance, including sales/use tax, 1099 reporting, and contractor compliance requirementsProduce timely, accurate financial reporting and dashboards, including Job Cost, WIP/over-under, cash vs. forecast, AP aging by project, AR and retainage status, change order pipeline, and margin analysisOperate a disciplined monthly and quarterly close process with defined SLAs for AP, AR billing, WIP preparation, and leadership reportingAdminister and optimize QuickBooks-Procore financial integrations covering budgets, commitments, direct costs, and pay applications; promote data standards and automationDocument, maintain, and continuously improve accounting SOPs, approval workflows, and month-end close checklistsLead and develop the accounting team (Accountant and Accounting Assistant) by assigning workloads, setting SLAs, coaching performance, and enabling cross-trainingPartner closely with PMs, PEs, and Superintendents to ensure cost data accuracy and timely billing; coordinate with owners and GCs on approvals and collectionsServe as the primary liaison with CPAs and banking partners, preparing support schedules and responding promptly to information requestsMPI does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, marital status, or based on an individual's status in any group or class protected by applicable federal, state or local law.
