Job Description

As the Financial Reporting Manager, you will lead the preparation and distribution of key financial reports for various departments within the firm. Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Monthly Financial Reporting: Oversee the preparation and review of monthly modified cash basis financial reports, including income statements, balance sheets, statements of cash flows, and other key performance metrics (e.g., billable hours, attorney productivity, etc.). Provide variance analysis against budget, forecast, and prior-year data.
  • Department-Specific Reporting: Manage reporting for legal departments, practice groups, and office leaders, focusing on the financial and key performance metrics relevant to each group.
  • Budget and Forecasting: Lead the preparation of annual operating and capital expenditure budgets, incorporating income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, and key performance metrics. Manage the quarterly forecasting process, analyzing year-to-date and projected variances.
  • Data Analysis and Recommendations: Prepare various analyses, offering recommendations to firm leadership based on financial reporting and budgeting data. Contribute to strategic financial decisions, such as partner hiring models and compensation cycles.
  • System Improvements: Collaborate in reconciling financial reports, recommend process enhancements, and assist in the implementation of budgeting and reporting software. Lead work streams during system upgrades to ensure financial data accuracy.
  • Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor the Reporting & Budgeting team, ensuring the timely and accurate delivery of financial reports. You will be responsible for training, performance reviews, and managing day-to-day operations within the team.

The Successful Applicant

  • Experience: A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required (advanced degree preferred). You should have at least 5 years of experience in financial reporting and budgeting, ideally within a law firm or professional services environment. A minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience is also required.
  • Technical Skills: Strong proficiency in accounting software (experience with CMS/Aderant or Elite required), Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Word. Familiarity with budgeting and reporting software, such as Iridium, is highly desirable.
  • Leadership & Communication: Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are essential. The successful candidate will have the ability to lead a team effectively, communicate complex financial data in a clear manner, and work collaboratively with stakeholders across the firm.
  • Analytical Abilities: Strong analytical skills, with a keen eye for detail and a comprehensive understanding of accounting principles. You must be able to perform in-depth analysis of financial data, balance sheet activity, and budget variations to provide actionable insights.
  • Problem-Solving & Initiative: Proactive in identifying and addressing complex financial issues. You should demonstrate critical thinking and the ability to make independent decisions while managing competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. You will need to keep accurate records, compile data, and provide concise financial reports to firm leadership.
