About Our Client

A growing utilities organization in Charlotte, NC is seeking a Substation Project Manager to lead the planning and execution of substation capital projects across the transmission and distribution network. This role will oversee projects from engineering through construction and commissioning, ensuring delivery on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with utility standards and safety requirements.

This is a hands-on project leadership role working closely with engineering teams, EPC contractors, and field construction crews on high-voltage substation infrastructure.

Job Description

  • Manage the full lifecycle of utility substation projects from engineering design through construction and commissioning
  • Lead capital projects involving new substation builds, expansions, and upgrades
  • Manage projects involving distribution and transmission voltages ranging from 15 kV to 230 kV
  • Oversee construction and upgrades for 69 kV, 115 kV, 138 kV, and 230 kV substations
  • Coordinate with engineering, protection & controls, civil, and field construction teams to deliver projects safely and efficiently
  • Manage project scope, schedules, budgets, and risk mitigation plans
  • Oversee EPC contractors, vendors, and subcontractors during construction activities
  • Support installation and commissioning of power transformers, breakers, switchgear, and protection systems
  • Ensure compliance with utility standards, safety requirements, and regulatory guidelines
  • Track project progress and provide status updates to leadership and stakeholders

  • Greenfield substation builds
  • Substation expansions and upgrades
  • Breaker replacements and relay upgrades
  • Transformer installations and replacements
  • Switchyard construction and bus reconfigurations
  • Protection & control modernization

The Successful Applicant

A successful Substation Project Manager should have:

  • 5-10+ years of experience managing utility substation or T&D infrastructure projects
  • Background working with electric utilities, EPC firms, or utility contractors
  • Strong understanding of substation equipment (transformers, breakers, relays, bus systems)
  • Experience managing multi-million-dollar capital projects
  • Ability to coordinate engineering, procurement, and construction teams
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred
