The Project/Controls Engineer is responsible for supporting and managing process control systems, automation equipment, and plant-wide controls infrastructure within a manufacturing environment. This role partners closely with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and IT teams to improve reliability, optimize production, reduce downtime, and support capital projects involving DCS, QCS, PLC, and networked control systems.

Job Description

  • Support and promote a strong safety culture across the facility.
  • Troubleshoot process, automation, and equipment-related issues impacting production.
  • Read, maintain, and update P&IDs, I/O drawings, and control system documentation.
  • Manage and maintain process control systems, automation equipment, and industrial networks.
  • Support upgrades and maintenance of process control computers and IT/OT infrastructure.
  • Lead control system modifications and improvements for new and existing equipment.
  • Manage capital projects involving DCS, QCS, PLC, HMI, and automation systems.
  • Work closely with maintenance teams to resolve controls-related downtime issues.
  • Implement engineering standards, controls policies, and change management processes.
  • Support quality control systems and interact with stakeholders across the mill.
  • Coordinate with Operations, Maintenance, Procurement, R&D, and Engineering teams to improve performance and reliability.

The Successful Applicant

A successful Automation and Controls Engineer should have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably Electrical Engineering.
  • 2+ years of process controls, automation, or controls engineering experience.
  • Experience supporting industrial manufacturing operations.
  • Strong interest in control systems, automation, and computer-based control platforms.
  • Experience with project management and capital project execution.
  • Ability to troubleshoot process and equipment-related issues.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Experience working with Windows-based industrial systems.
  • Knowledge of PLCs, VFDs, HMIs, and industrial automation systems.
  • AutoCAD experience preferred.
  • Experience with defect detection or gauging systems is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Allen-Bradley PLC platforms preferred.
