The Controls Engineer is responsible for the design, programming, installation, commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of industrial control systems, automation equipment, and operational technology (OT) networks. This hands-on position plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability, safety, and performance of manufacturing operations through support of PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, drives, and motion control equipment.

Job Description

  • Design, program, install, and troubleshoot PLC-based and proprietary control systems.
  • Develop and support HMI, SCADA, data acquisition, and automation systems.
  • Manage and maintain plant OT networks, including industrial Ethernet infrastructure and managed switches.
  • Troubleshoot communication issues involving Ethernet and legacy serial networks (RS232/RS485).
  • Commission new equipment, including I/O verification, safety validation, and functional testing.
  • Configure, troubleshoot, and support VFDs, servo drives, motors, and motion control systems.
  • Maintain production dashboards, historian systems, OPC infrastructure, and automated reporting tools.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between Engineering and IT for machine networking and OT/IT integration.
  • Create and maintain electrical schematics, control documentation, and system records.
  • Lead equipment upgrades, retrofits, and automation improvement projects.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, controls, network, and machine-level production issues.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to maintenance and automation personnel.
  • Document system changes and maintenance activities within CMMS systems.
  • Support plant shutdown activities and ensure compliance with safety and Lockout/Tagout procedures.

The Successful Applicant



The ideal Controls Engineer should have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent industrial controls experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in industrial automation, controls engineering, or OT networking.
  • Strong PLC programming and troubleshooting experience with Rockwell, Siemens, Mitsubishi, or similar platforms.
  • Experience developing and supporting HMI and SCADA applications.
  • Knowledge of industrial Ethernet networking, IP addressing, subnetting, and managed switches.
  • Experience with VFDs, servo systems, motors, and motion control applications.
  • Ability to troubleshoot RS232/RS485 and other legacy industrial communication systems.
  • Experience commissioning PLC-controlled manufacturing equipment.
  • Strong diagnostic, problem-solving, and root cause analysis skills.
  • Excellent documentation, communication, and project management abilities.
  • Ability to work independently in a hands-on manufacturing environment.
