Job Description

  • Prepare detailed mechanical cost estimates for HVAC, plumbing, piping, and related systems on commercial construction projects
  • Review drawings, specifications, and bid documents to scope and quantify work accurately
  • Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and vendor proposals, ensuring complete and competitive pricing
  • Perform quantity takeoffs and cost analysis using estimating software and Excel
  • Identify project risks, value engineering opportunities, and cost-saving strategies
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and business development teams during preconstruction
  • Attend site visits, pre-bid meetings, and client presentations as needed
  • Maintain relationships with subcontractors and suppliers to ensure strong bid coverage
  • Support post-bid activities, including clarification of scope and turnover to operations teams

The Successful Applicant

  • Experience: 3-10+ years of mechanical estimating experience within commercial construction or a related subcontracting discipline (HVAC, plumbing, piping)
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of mechanical systems, construction methods, and cost structures
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to interpret drawings/specs and develop accurate takeoffs and pricing models
  • Software Proficiency: Experience with estimating tools (e.g., Bluebeam, PlanSwift, ProEst, Sage Estimating) and strong Excel skills
  • Communication: Clear and confident communicator, comfortable working cross-functionally and externally with vendors
  • Attention to Detail: Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously
  • Education (Preferred): Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Local Insight (Preferred): Familiarity with the Central PA / State College construction market and subcontractor network
