Job Description

  • Develop physical design packages for transmission and distribution substations (12kV-500kV).
  • Prepare detailed engineering drawings including:
    • General Arrangement (GA) plans
    • Equipment plans and elevations
    • Section views
    • Foundation plans
    • Grounding layouts
    • Conduit and cable trench layouts
    • Control building layouts
    • Bus and equipment arrangements
    • Structural steel details
  • Create and revise drawings using AutoCAD, MicroStation, or Bentley OpenUtilities Substation.
  • Produce accurate Bills of Material (BOMs) and equipment lists.
  • Coordinate designs with civil, structural, electrical, protection & controls, and transmission engineering teams.
  • Perform field walkdowns and site visits to verify existing conditions and support design development.
  • Ensure designs comply with utility standards, NEC, NESC, IEEE, ANSI, and client specifications.
  • Incorporate vendor drawings and equipment information into final design packages.
  • Support constructability reviews and resolve design issues during construction.
  • Participate in QA/QC reviews and maintain drawing quality standards.
  • Assist with project schedules and meet established design milestones.

The Successful Applicant

A successful Physical Substation Designer should have:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, Drafting, Design, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3+ years of physical substation design experience.
  • Experience designing utility substations from 12kV through 500kV.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
  • Ability to interpret one-line diagrams, schematics, and engineering calculations.
  • Strong understanding of substation equipment including:
    • Power transformers
    • Circuit breakers
    • Disconnect switches
    • Instrument transformers (CTs/PTs)
    • Buswork
    • Control buildings
    • Steel structures
  • Knowledge of utility drawing standards and construction practices.
