This role leads multidisciplinary engineering efforts for new substations, expansions, upgrades, and modernization projects while ensuring compliance with client standards, industry codes, budget, and schedule requirements.

Job Description

  • Lead the engineering and design of high-voltage substations ranging from 12kV to 765kV.
  • Develop and review substation physical layouts, equipment arrangements, grounding plans, conduit plans, and cable routing designs.
  • Perform engineering calculations including grounding, bus sizing, cable sizing, lightning protection, and equipment loading studies.
  • Prepare and review design packages, specifications, reports, and construction documents.
  • Coordinate with protection & control, civil, structural, transmission line, and distribution engineering teams.
  • Support project managers with scope development, cost estimates, schedules, and resource planning.
  • Serve as the technical lead for utility and client projects.
  • Review vendor drawings and equipment submittals for transformers, breakers, switches, protection systems, and associated station equipment.
  • Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, and quality assurance processes.
  • Provide technical support during procurement, construction, commissioning, and energization activities.
  • Ensure compliance with client standards, NESC, NEC, IEEE, and applicable utility requirements.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support professional development efforts.
  • Participate in proposal development, client presentations, and business development activities.

The Successful Applicant

A successful Senior Substation Engineer should have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 8+ years of experience in substation engineering and power delivery projects.
  • Experience designing utility substations and switchyards.
  • Strong understanding of substation physical design principles and utility engineering practices.
  • Experience with high-voltage equipment including:
    • Power Transformers
    • Circuit Breakers
    • Disconnect Switches
    • Instrument Transformers
    • Surge Arresters
    • Bus Systems
    • Reactive Power Equipment
  • Knowledge of substation grounding, lightning protection, and equipment layout design.
  • Experience preparing engineering calculations, specifications, and construction drawings.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work directly with clients and multidisciplinary project teams.
