This Senior Substation Engineer will oversee physical and/or protection and control design, review technical deliverables, coordinate multidisciplinary teams, support clients, and mentor junior engineers throughout the full project lifecycle.

Job Description

  • Lead the engineering and design of new and existing high-voltage substations.
  • Develop and review substation physical and/or protection and control design packages.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, specifications, drawings, reports, and construction documents.
  • Develop or review:
    • General arrangements and equipment layouts
    • One-line and three-line diagrams
    • Grounding, lightning protection, conduit, and cable plans
    • Bus, equipment, and structural calculations
    • AC and DC station-service systems
    • Protection schematics and logic diagrams
    • Control schematics and wiring diagrams
    • Relay panel layouts
    • Bills of materials and cable schedules
    • Equipment specifications and procurement packages
  • Perform or oversee substation grounding, lightning protection, bus, battery, and equipment sizing calculations.
  • Select and specify major substation equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, switches, instrument transformers, relays, control panels, batteries, and chargers.
  • Lead technical reviews and quality-control checks of engineering deliverables.
  • Ensure designs comply with client standards, applicable codes, and industry requirements.
  • Coordinate with civil, structural, transmission line, protection and control, communications, and project-management teams.
  • Serve as a technical point of contact for clients, utilities, vendors, and construction teams.
  • Support project planning, scope development, scheduling, budgeting, and resource forecasting.
  • Participate in site visits, field investigations, construction support, testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Review vendor drawings, contractor submittals, RFIs, and field-change requests.
  • Provide technical mentorship and oversight to junior engineers, EITs, and designers.
  • Identify project risks, design conflicts, and constructability concerns and recommend practical solutions.
  • Support proposal development, cost estimates, and client presentations as needed.

The Successful Applicant

A successful Senior Substation Engineer should have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Professional Engineer license required or the ability to obtain one within an agreed-upon timeframe.
  • Typically 8 or more years of substation engineering or power-delivery experience.
  • Demonstrated experience designing medium- and high-voltage substations.
  • Experience with utility, consulting engineering, EPC, or design-build projects.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable standards, including IEEE, ANSI, NESC, NEC, and relevant utility requirements.
  • Experience developing and reviewing issued-for-construction substation design packages.
  • Ability to lead technical work, manage competing priorities, and communicate effectively with clients and project teams.
  • Strong written, verbal, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to travel periodically for site visits, client meetings, and project support.
