Job Description

  • Develop physical design packages for AIS and GIS substations ranging from 12kV-500kV+.
  • Produce detailed engineering drawings including:
    • General arrangement plans
    • Plan and elevation views
    • Equipment layouts
    • Control building layouts
    • Conduit and trench plans
    • Grounding layouts
    • Lightning protection plans
    • Bus and rigid bus layouts
    • Structural steel and foundation drawings
  • Prepare material take-offs (MTOs) and Bills of Material (BOMs).
  • Coordinate physical design with Protection & Controls, Civil/Structural, Transmission Line, and Project Management teams.
  • Perform site walkdowns and incorporate field conditions into design packages.
  • Conduct QA/QC reviews to ensure compliance with client standards, NEC, NESC, IEEE, and utility specifications.
  • Support construction by responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and incorporating as-built revisions.
  • Lead design reviews with internal teams and clients.
  • Mentor junior designers and provide technical guidance on drafting standards and best practices.

The Successful Applicant

A successful Senior Substation Physical Designer should have:

  • 8+ years of substation physical design experience.
  • Experience designing utility substations from 69kV-500kV (higher voltage preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Physical layout design
    • Grounding systems
    • Conduit and cable routing
    • Bus design
    • Equipment clearances
    • Structural coordination
  • Experience supporting EPC, utility, or consulting engineering projects.
  • Ability to read one-line diagrams, schematics, and equipment specifications.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams.
