Senior Substation Physical Designer

Job Description

Develop physical design packages for AIS and GIS substations ranging from 12kV-500kV+.
Produce detailed engineering drawings including:
- General arrangement plans
- Plan and elevation views
- Equipment layouts
- Control building layouts
- Conduit and trench plans
- Grounding layouts
- Lightning protection plans
- Bus and rigid bus layouts
- Structural steel and foundation drawings
Prepare material take-offs (MTOs) and Bills of Material (BOMs).
Coordinate physical design with Protection & Controls, Civil/Structural, Transmission Line, and Project Management teams.
Perform site walkdowns and incorporate field conditions into design packages.
Conduct QA/QC reviews to ensure compliance with client standards, NEC, NESC, IEEE, and utility specifications.
Support construction by responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and incorporating as-built revisions.
Lead design reviews with internal teams and clients.
Mentor junior designers and provide technical guidance on drafting standards and best practices.

The Successful Applicant

A successful Senior Substation Physical Designer should have:

8+ years of substation physical design experience.
Experience designing utility substations from 69kV-500kV (higher voltage preferred).
Strong knowledge of:
- Physical layout design
- Grounding systems
- Conduit and cable routing
- Bus design
- Equipment clearances
- Structural coordination
Experience supporting EPC, utility, or consulting engineering projects.
Ability to read one-line diagrams, schematics, and equipment specifications.
Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams.
