The Substation Physical Project Designer supports high‑ and extra‑high‑voltage substation projects by leading physical design efforts, producing and reviewing detailed drawings, coordinating with engineers and stakeholders, and ensuring compliance with codes, standards, and client requirements from concept through construction.

Job Description

Working under the direction of Project Manager(s) and Project Engineer(s) your role will encompass the following:

  • Preparation of engineering drawings, calculations, analyses, reports and designs for electrical substations (Low, Medium and High Voltage).
  • Preparation of calculations, design sketches and redline drawings.
  • Working with Designers and CADD Technicians to develop drawings in accordance with national design standards, safety codes and project specifications and requirements.
  • Developing design deliverables including one-line diagrams, protection and control schematics, wiring diagrams, SCADA schemes, communications plans, substation physical layouts, material lists, conduit and cable sizing/routing, AC and DC systems calculations and sizing, and substation grounding.
  • Performing site visits during the design, construction and as-built phases of projects

The Successful Applicant

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Associate Degree in Drafting or equivalent technical experience.
  • 5+ years of substation physical design experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
  • Strong ability to visualize equipment details, phase‑to‑ground and phase‑to‑phase clearances.
  • Ability to multitask across multiple projects.
  • Strong 3D visualization ability without the use of computer tools.



Valued Knowledge / Skills

  • Associate Degree in Computer‑Aided Design.
  • Familiarity with Bentley Substation, Inventor SDS, and BlueBeam.
  • Experience with ground‑based Lidar and converting point‑cloud data to vector files.
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles for producing technical plans, drawings, and models.
  • Understanding of engineering technology and how various equipment integrates within a technical design.
