The firm is seeking a Mid‑Level Substation Physical Design Engineer with strong technical experience in high‑voltage substation design. Responsibilities include physical design up to 500 kV, electrical system modeling, preparation of specifications and reports, and applying all relevant codes and standards. This role will lead design efforts with minimal supervision and provide technical guidance across multiple concurrent projects.

Job Description

High‑Voltage Substation Physical Design

  • Create or modify:
    • Single‑line diagrams and general arrangements
    • Detailed elevations, section views, and installation details
    • Bills of materials, bid units, and material counts
  • Perform calculations related to:
    • Equipment and conductor sizing
    • Rigid bus strength
    • Insulation coordination
    • Grounding and lightning protection



Technical Tools & Software

  • Experience with electrical system analysis tools preferred (ASPEN, ETAP, SKM, PSS/E, PSLF, CDEGS, WinIGS)
  • Familiarity with design tools preferred (Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Inventor, Revit, MicroStation)



Project Coordination

  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines as needed
  • Conduct site visits for data gathering and as‑builts
  • Write procurement and construction specifications
  • Evaluate contractor bids



Quality & Construction Support

  • Review shop drawings and verify conformance with design/specifications
  • Support factory acceptance testing
  • Provide field support during construction and commissioning



Leadership & Mentorship

  • Help teach and mentor junior engineers and design staff
  • Support fee estimates and proposal development
  • Participate in occasional overnight travel for client meetings or site visit

The Successful Applicant

A successful Substation Engineer should have:

  • B.S. degree from an ABET‑accredited university
  • 5+ years of substation physical design experience
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work legally in the U.S. without restriction
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred, or ability to obtain within 6 months
  • Experience managing design budgets and schedules is a plus
  • Experience supporting marketing/proposal efforts is preferred
