Job Description

  • Perform engineering and design for new substations and substation expansions (12kV through 500kV).
  • Develop one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, protection and control drawings, and physical layouts.
  • Prepare equipment specifications for transformers, breakers, disconnect switches, relays, bus systems, and associated substation equipment.
  • Conduct engineering studies including load flow, short-circuit, grounding, insulation coordination, and relay coordination analyses.
  • Support protection and control design activities and coordinate with relay engineering teams.
  • Review vendor drawings and technical submittals to ensure compliance with project requirements.
  • Collaborate with project managers, construction teams, utility clients, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Support construction activities by responding to RFIs, reviewing field changes, and participating in commissioning efforts.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable industry standards and regulations, including IEEE, ANSI, NESC, NEC, and utility-specific requirements.
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables while maintaining quality standards.

The Successful Applicant

A successful Substation Engineer should have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • 3+ years of substation engineering experience. (Level may be adjusted based on experience.)
  • Knowledge of transmission and distribution systems.
  • Experience with substation physical and/or protection & control design.
  • Familiarity with industry standards including IEEE, ANSI, NESC, and NEC.
  • Proficiency with engineering software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, ETAP, SKM, CYME, ASPEN, or similar tools.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
