The Substation Engineer will design and review high-voltage substation projects ranging from 34.5 kV to 500 kV. This position will develop physical and/or P&C packages, perform engineering calculations, prepare technical specifications, and coordinate with utilities, clients, vendors, and multidisciplinary project teams.

Job Description

  • Develop and review physical and/or P&C design packages for greenfield and brownfield substations.
  • Prepare one-line and three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, panel layouts, and protection-system interfaces.
  • Develop general arrangements, equipment layouts, sections and elevations, grounding grids, conduit plans, bus layouts, foundation plans, and steel-support details.
  • Perform grounding, lightning-protection, conduit-fill, cable-sizing, battery-sizing, AC/DC load, and equipment-loading calculations.
  • Prepare equipment specifications and technical bid evaluations for transformers, breakers, switches, instrument transformers, control buildings, and protection panels.
  • Review vendor drawings and perform point-to-point checks to verify schematics, wiring diagrams, terminal blocks, cables, and equipment connections.
  • Establish electrical clearances, bus heights, equipment spacing, and foundation elevations in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Develop bills of materials, construction drawing packages, engineering scopes, cost estimates, and technical specifications.
  • Coordinate physical, P&C, civil, structural, transmission, and communications interfaces throughout design and construction.
  • Resolve RFIs, support construction and commissioning, conduct site visits, and incorporate field changes into record drawings.
  • Perform quality-control reviews and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and designers.

The Successful Applicant

A successful Substation Engineer should have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Five or more years of substation engineering experience.
  • Experience with physical substation design, P&C design, or both.
  • Working knowledge of IEEE, NESC, NEC, and applicable utility standards.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
  • Experience with Bluebeam Revu, CDEGS, WinIGS, ETAP, or similar software is beneficial.
  • Strong technical, communication, and project-coordination skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and engineering deliverables.
  • EIT certification required or strongly preferred; PE license is a plus.
