We are seeking an experienced Transmission Line Engineer to support the design and execution of overhead transmission line projects ranging from 69 kV to 500 kV. This engineer will perform detailed line design, structural analysis, clearance studies, foundation coordination, and technical calculations for new-build, rebuild, and grid-modernization projects.

Job Description

  • Perform detailed engineering and design for overhead transmission lines ranging from 69 kV to 500 kV.
  • Develop transmission line alignments, plan-and-profile drawings, structure spotting, framing plans, and construction packages.
  • Create and maintain PLS-CADD models using survey, LiDAR, GIS, utility, and environmental data.
  • Perform structure modeling and analysis using PLS-POLE and PLS-TOWER.
  • Complete conductor and shield-wire selection, sag-tension calculations, loading-tree development, and stringing-chart preparation.
  • Evaluate NESC, GO 95, ASCE, IEEE, client-specific, and applicable state loading requirements.
  • Perform electrical-clearance, blowout, uplift, galloping, and vegetation-clearance studies.
  • Design and analyze wood, steel, concrete, lattice, monopole, and H-frame transmission structures.
  • Calculate structure reactions, loading cases, allowable spans, attachment heights, and foundation design loads.
  • Coordinate with civil and geotechnical engineers on drilled-shaft, direct-embed, micropile, and specialty foundation designs.
  • Develop material specifications and bills of material for structures, conductors, insulators, hardware, grounding, and associated components.
  • Perform route evaluations and support constructability, permitting, right-of-way, access-road, and environmental reviews.
  • Conduct field investigations, condition assessments, structure inspections, and construction-support activities.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, technical reports, design criteria, specifications, and procurement documentation.
  • Review vendor drawings, fabrication submittals, shop drawings, RFIs, and contractor technical submissions.
  • Provide technical support during construction, including design clarifications, field-change evaluations, and record-drawing updates.
  • Coordinate transmission-line interfaces with substations, distribution circuits, telecommunications, and underground systems.
  • Lead design reviews and perform quality-control checks on calculations, models, drawings, and construction packages.
  • Support project planning, scope development, cost estimates, schedules, and multidisciplinary coordination.
  • Mentor junior engineers and designers while overseeing delegated technical work.

The Successful Applicant

A successful Transmission Line Engineer should have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • At least five years of transmission-line engineering or design experience.
  • Demonstrated experience designing overhead transmission lines at 69 kV or higher.
  • Proficiency with PLS-CADD and experience with PLS-POLE and/or PLS-TOWER.
  • Strong understanding of conductor mechanics, structural loading, sag-tension analysis, clearances, grounding, and transmission-line construction.
  • Working knowledge of NESC, ASCE Manual 74, ASCE 10, IEEE standards, and utility-specific design criteria.
  • Experience working with AutoCAD, MicroStation, GIS, LiDAR, and survey data.
  • Ability to produce and independently review engineering calculations and issued-for-construction deliverables.
  • Strong technical writing, problem-solving, client-communication, and multidisciplinary coordination skills.
  • EIT certification required or strongly preferred; Professional Engineer license preferred.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for site visits, client meetings, and construction support.
