About Our Client

We are partnering with a growing engineering organization supporting major utility and infrastructure projects across the Transmission & Distribution market. Their team is involved in high-voltage substation design projects supporting grid modernization, reliability improvements, renewable integration, and large-scale utility expansion efforts across North America.

Job Description

  • Develop physical substation design packages for utility projects ranging from 12kV through 500kV
  • Prepare and review:
    • General arrangement drawings
    • Equipment layouts
    • Bus layouts and sections
    • Elevations and details
    • Grounding plans
    • Conduit and cable trench layouts
    • Control building layouts
    • Lightning protection plans
  • Coordinate closely with protection & control, civil/structural, transmission line, and project management teams
  • Perform equipment spacing and clearance calculations in accordance with utility and industry standards
  • Support material selection and equipment specification activities
  • Ensure designs comply with:
    • NEC
    • NESC
    • IEEE
    • Utility design standards
  • Participate in design reviews, QA/QC processes, and client coordination meetings
  • Support construction issue resolution and field design updates as needed
  • Assist with project scheduling, budgeting, and engineering documentation

The Successful Applicant

A successful Electrical Engineer - Physical Substation Design should have:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering preferred
  • 3+ years of experience in substation physical design or power delivery engineering
  • Experience supporting utility, EPC, or consulting engineering projects
  • Knowledge of substation design standards and utility practices
  • Familiarity with high-voltage substation equipment including:
    • Breakers
    • Disconnect switches
    • CTs/PTs
    • Transformers
    • Relay/control panels
    • Rigid and strain bus systems
  • Proficiency with:
    • AutoCAD
    • MicroStation
    • Autodesk Inventor (preferred)
    • Bentley Substation (preferred)
  • Strong understanding of physical layout and electrical clearance requirements
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills
