We are seeking a Senior Substation Physical Designer with 7+ years of experience supporting high-voltage transmission and distribution substation projects. This role will lead the physical design and layout development of substations ranging from 69kV to 500kV while serving as a technical resource for engineering, design, and project teams. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in substation layouts, equipment arrangements, grounding systems, and construction drawing development.

Job Description

  • Develop physical design packages for transmission and distribution substations ranging from 12kV through 500kV.
  • Create site plans, equipment layouts, elevations, sections, grounding plans, conduit plans, and cable trench layouts.
  • Produce detailed design drawings utilizing AutoCAD, MicroStation, AutoCAD Electrical, and/or Bentley Substation.
  • Prepare and modify general arrangements, control building layouts, foundation plans, and steel structure drawings.
  • Coordinate physical substation designs with protection and controls, civil, structural, and electrical engineering teams.
  • Perform equipment spacing and clearance reviews in accordance with utility and industry standards.
  • Support constructability reviews and resolve design conflicts throughout project execution.
  • Conduct field visits and support site walkdowns as needed to verify existing conditions.
  • Incorporate client standards, specifications, and regulatory requirements into design deliverables.
  • Prepare construction-ready drawing packages and support project documentation efforts.

The Successful Applicant

A successful Senior Substation Physical Designer should have:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, Drafting, Design, or a related technical field.
  • 3+ years of experience in substation physical design.
  • Experience supporting utility, EPC, consulting engineering, or power delivery projects.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bentley Substation, or similar design software.
  • Knowledge of high-voltage substation equipment including:
    • Power transformers
    • Circuit breakers
    • Disconnect switches
    • Bus systems
    • Surge arresters
    • Instrument transformers
    • Control buildings
  • Understanding of electrical clearances, grounding systems, and substation layout principles.
  • Ability to interpret engineering calculations, equipment specifications, and design standards.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
