Job Description

  • Design and develop substations ranging from 12kV to 500kV
  • Prepare substation physical layouts, one-line diagrams, grounding plans, and protection schematics
  • Support AIS and GIS substation design projects for transmission and distribution systems
  • Perform equipment selection and sizing for:
    • Power transformers
    • Circuit breakers
    • Disconnect switches
    • CTs/PTs
    • Bus systems
    • Reactive compensation equipment
  • Coordinate protection & controls integration and SCADA systems
  • Support relay settings coordination and commissioning activities
  • Perform grounding, short-circuit, and load flow studies
  • Coordinate with civil, structural, transmission line, and protection engineering teams
  • Conduct site visits, field assessments, and construction support activities
  • Review contractor submittals, RFIs, and as-built documentation
  • Ensure compliance with IEEE, NEC, NESC, utility, and client-specific standards

The Successful Applicant

A successful Substation Engineer (Contract-to-Hire) should have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university
  • 3+ years of substation engineering experience
  • Experience working on substations in the 69kV-500kV range
  • Familiarity with transmission and distribution utility standards
  • Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar design platforms
  • Knowledge of ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, or similar power systems software
  • Understanding of relay protection and substation design principles
  • Strong communication and project coordination skills
