Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Substation Engineer with expertise in either Physical Substation Design or Protection & Controls (P&C) Engineering to support quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) reviews of electrical substation engineering deliverables. This is a long-term role focused on reviewing engineering packages, providing technical quality oversight, and conducting project-specific field verification activities throughout Southern California.The ideal candidate will possess a strong electrical engineering background, extensive substation design experience, and the ability to identify design discrepancies, code compliance issues, and engineering quality concerns across a variety of utility and infrastructure projects. Individual project reviews typically span 4-6 weeks, followed by field site visits to verify design accuracy and existing conditions.Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive QA/QC reviews of substation engineering packages, including drawings, calculations, specifications, and design documentation.
  • Review physical substation or protection & controls design deliverables for compliance with client standards, industry requirements, and engineering best practices.
  • Identify design errors, omissions, constructability concerns, and potential field conflicts.
  • Provide detailed review comments and work collaboratively with engineering teams to resolve issues.
  • Conduct field visits at project sites to verify existing conditions and validate engineering drawings against installed equipment and site configurations.
  • Document field observations and provide recommendations for design revisions or corrections.
  • Support project teams with technical expertise related to substation design, equipment layout, protection systems, and engineering standards.

The Successful Applicant

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • 7+ years of experience in electrical substation engineering.
  • Experience as either:
    • A Physical Substation Design Engineer, or
    • A Protection & Controls (P&C) Engineer.
  • Strong understanding of utility substation design standards, electrical equipment, and engineering documentation.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing engineering drawings and performing QA/QC activities.
  • Ability to conduct field assessments and verify engineering designs in utility and substation environments.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to travel throughout Los Angeles and Southern California for project-specific field verification visits.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience supporting utility transmission and distribution substation projects.
  • Familiarity with California utility standards and practices.
  • Prior experience performing independent design reviews, owner's engineering reviews, or engineering quality audits.
