The Payroll Manager will play a critical role in leading day‑to‑day, hands‑on payroll processing and compliance for a multi‑state employee population of approximately 3,000 employees. This role sits at the center of an evolving payroll organization following a major integration and is ideal for someone who has grown from payroll specialist to manager and understands payroll from the ground up.

Payroll is a core priority, with recent system integrations and investments in people, technology, and process improvement.

Job Description

  • Lead end‑to‑end, multi‑state payroll processing across multiple entities.
  • Maintain payroll data integrity (new hires, terminations, compensation changes, bonuses, benefits, timecards).
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local wage and tax laws (including CA and NY).
  • Act as escalation point for complex payroll issues and employee inquiries.
  • Partner with HR and Finance on reconciliations, reporting, and audits.
  • Support system optimization and process improvements (ADP Workforce Now; Workday a plus).
  • Assist with year‑end activities including W‑2s and tax filings.
  • Mentor and support payroll specialists, providing coverage and guidance as needed.
  • Help shape payroll policies, procedures, and best practices during continued integration.

The Successful Applicant

A successful Payroll Manager should have:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 5+ years of progressive payroll experience, including multi‑state payroll.
  • Hands‑on payroll processing experience required (not oversight‑only).
  • ADP Workforce Now experience required; Workday a plus.
  • Strong payroll compliance and tax knowledge.
  • Financial services or professional services experience strongly preferred.
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical mindset.
  • Excellent communication skills; able to interact with employees at all levels.
  • Professional, collaborative style with strong attention to detail.
